OpenAI trained it to be especially good at steerability and faster responses when less thinking is needed, code generation and coding use cases, and agentic workflows. It shipped in the Responses and Chat Completions APIs as gpt-5.1, with gpt-5.1-chat-latest pointing at the ChatGPT version, and alongside GPT-5.1-Codex and GPT-5.1-Codex-Mini for agentic coding. GPT-5.1-Codex-Max followed in the API in December. Its successor is GPT-5.2.

What changed
The headline API change from GPT-5 is the default reasoning setting: GPT-5.1 defaults to a new none setting for faster responses when less thinking is required, instead of GPT-5's medium default.
