Anthropic · Sonnet
Anthropic released Claude Sonnet 5 on June 30, 2026.
Claude Sonnet 5 is the Anthropic model launched on June 30, 2026 as the next generation of its Sonnet family. It launched at introductory pricing of $2 / $10 per million input / output tokens, which became the standard price on August 10, 2026 instead of rising to $3 / $15. It supports a 1M token context window, 128k max output tokens and the same tools and platform features as Claude Sonnet 4.6, except Priority Tier. It uses a new tokenizer that produces about 30% more tokens for the same text. Computer use and browser use toolsets came to it in August 2026. Its successor is Claude Sonnet 5.5.
claude-sonnet-5Three behavior changes apply when moving from Claude Sonnet 4.6: adaptive thinking is on by default, manual extended thinking (budget_tokens) is removed and returns an error, and non-default temperature, top_p or top_k values return an error.
The new tokenizer means the same prompt counts as roughly 30% more tokens, so cost comparisons should be measured on real traffic.
